Psalm 1. CHAPTER 1. Friend of God and blessed

1.1 Known by God and friend of Him

Would you like to be known by God too (Ps. 1:6a - „For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous”), as God knew Abraham? For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him” (Gen. 18:19). It is extraordinary to know that “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness” (James 2:23). Abraham was known by God, he was God’s friend, he had a relationship with God, because of his faith and righteousness, his pure heart. What better, more lasting, and more reliable relationship can exist in this universe than a relationship with the God of the universe? To know Him and be known by Him.

1.2 The blessed God and His righteous, blessed children

On the other hand, God is blessed and happy (1 Tim. 1:11 — “that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me”; 1 Tim. 6:15 — “which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords”), and God does not keep this blessing only for Himself. He desires that the human being He created would also be happy and blessed. How do we know this? From Psalm 1:1 — “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked…” — and what follows is a revelation of God’s heart. And the heart of God contains both “no’s” and “yes’s,” just like in a marriage. A marriage is beautiful when you have a list of “don’t do this” (for example: don’t speak harshly to your husband or wife, don’t look after another woman or another man), as well as a list of “do this” (for example: speak kindly to your husband or wife, be faithful only to your wife or faithful to your husband to the end).

Therefore, the person who is a friend of God, known by God — the person who is blessed in the eyes of the blessed God — does not do certain things: he does not walk in step with the wicked, does not stand in the way that sinners take, and does not sit in the company of mockers (verse 1). This person does not desire wickedness or sin, does not associate with people of this kind, and does not mock others. But on the other hand, he does those things that are pleasing to the Lord: “whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night” (Psalm 1:2 NIV). His righteousness and his knowledge of God come from the fact that he loves the Word of God — the Bible — he reads it, he is nourished by it, he continually meditates on it, and he takes delight in doing so.
