Psalm 1. CHAPTER 1. Friend of God and blessed

1.1 Known by God and friend of Him

Would you like to be known by God too (Ps. 1:6a - „For Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked shall perish”)
, as God knew Abraham? ”For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him” (Gen. 18:19). It is extraordinary to know that “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God” (James 2:23). Abraham was known by God, he was God’s friend, he had a relationship with God, because of his faith, righteousness and pure heart. What better, more lasting, and more reliable relationship can exist in this universe than a relationship with the God of the universe? To know Him and be known by Him.

1.2 The blessed God and His righteous, blessed children

On the other hand, God is blessed and happy (1 Tim. 1:11 — “according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust”; 1 Tim. 6:15 — “which at the right time he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords.”), and God does not keep this blessing only for Himself. He desires that the human being He created would also be happy and blessed. How do we know this? From Psalm 1:1 — “Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked…” — and what follows is a revelation of God’s heart. And the heart of God contains both “no’s” and “yes’s,” just like in a marriage. A marriage is beautiful when you have a list of “don’t do this” (for example: don’t speak harshly to your husband or wife, don’t look after another woman or another man), as well as a list of “do this” (for example: speak kindly to your husband or wife, be faithful only to your wife or faithful to your husband to the end).

Therefore, the person who is a friend of God, known by God — the person who is blessed in the eyes of the blessed God — does not do certain things: doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers (verse 1)
. This person does not desire wickedness or sin, does not associate with people of this kind, and does not mock others. But on the other hand, he does those things that are pleasing to the Lord: “but his delight is in Yahweh’s law. On his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). His righteousness and his knowledge of God come from the fact that he loves the Word of God — the Bible — he reads it, he is nourished by it, he continually meditates on it, and he takes delight in doing so.
